A New Danger To Worry About?
If you work from home and own your own business, then you may also have to deal with workaholism.

More than ever, home business owners are struggling with overwork. When your office is just a few doors away from your bedroom it's easy to get too caught up in your work and not even realize it.

That's what happened to the home business owner profiled on the Entrepreneur.com story featured yesterday at msnbc.

Kristin Edelhauser Chessman wrote the piece that tells of a "41-year-old business owner who admits that he doesn't get much sleep."

When does working at your home business become too much?

Kristin's article gives some excellent suggestions for determining if you are a workaholic. Personally, I'd suggest that you're taking your business too seriously if it's interfering with other aspects of your life, such as relationships and health.

How can you avoid succumbing to the temptation of workaholism?

The answer is both easy, and hard. If you work from home it's more important than ever to set boundaries between your work life and your personal life.

For example, people who would never consider driving in to an office at 2:00 a.m. will get up and work in a home office at that time.

You can stop this behavior by designating certain times as "work" times and others as "personal" and sticking to your designations.

What about you? Have you felt pressure to overwork since you began working at home? How do you separate your business life and your personal life?

Sometimes I work too much - but I don't feel like I have much of a choice until I'm making more money.

Hi Trisha!

I don't know your specific circumstances, but I hope that you can earn enough so that you can afford to take a break.

I usually avoid overworking by keeping a schedule. When working on multiple projects, I have to make sure I carve out the time for them carefully or else I don't feel very productive. I have been known to work for too long without taking a break, which is definitely another side of workaholism.

Hi Kimberlee!

What you say is definitely true. It's important to make a schedule. Of course, if we work-at-home (and in particular, for ourselves), then it's up to us to enforce that schedule.

I struggle with this every day, even more so over the past few months. I've been swamped with work, and 2 am has become my normal bedtime. We just booked tickets for our annual holiday. It's the only way I'll be able to get back to life again!

It's defintely much much easier to cross the line to complete workaholicism (I am not sure that word exists!)when you're working from home.

Hi Preschool Mama!

I'm glad that you're going to get to take a vacation. It sounds like you've earned it.

I most certainly overwork, but I make sure that when my SO needs me or wants my time that I drop work and go smell the flowers.
