For the past few days, we've been running a series on rising fuel costs. This is the third in the four part series.
Earlier installments in the series included:
Gas prices are affecting Americans across the board. In fact, some districts have decreased the number of days that children attend school. You can read the ABC News story here. Continue Reading |

High fuel prices impact businesses directly, by increasing the cost of transportation. They also impact businesses indirectly by increasing the cost of goods (as the manufacturers increase prices to keep up with the fuel cost).
If you have a family, then this means that your grocery prices are increasing. More money spent on groceries means that your home business has to earn more to maintain your family's lifestyle. I've found a neat way of dealing with the high cost of groceries that saves me about $5,000 a year. For the past for years, I've been using The Grocery Game to control my family's grocery costs. Today is Memorial Day in the United States. This is a day set aside to honor those who gave their lives for the country.
Many towns and cities will have parades and picnics. For most U.S. workers, this is day off to spend with friends and family. The Memorial Day holiday goes all the way back to the Civil War in the United States. Most of the National Cemetaries will have memorial services. If you homeschool, a study of the history of Memorial Day can make an interesting school project. Continue Reading |

It's the gold standard of business. It's what keeps your customers coming back time and again. Yet few business owners really understand how to develop loyal customers. Do you? I recently learned a lesson about customer loyalty from one of my own clients, believe it or not. Continue Reading |

I asked the Twitterosphere how they dealth with distractions today. I did it for this post, but I had a personal reason for asking as well.
First, here's my story: Today was supposed to be an easy work day for me. I had my schedule set up (or, so I thought) and even had time worked in for an outing with my daughter. Then . . . it happened. I couldn't open a client's attachment and I had a project due for that same client. To top it off, Twitter kept going down. All of the sudden my easy day looked tougher. Now, I don't know about you, but I find problems extremely distracting. If too much goes wrong I tend to get flustered and have trouble focusing. Well, all did end well. I got my projects done and I'm getting this post up. Still, I'm eager to learn some tips for dealing with distraction. Continue Reading |

Today is the birthday of every home business owner's favorite uniform (or at least the favorite apparel of this work-at-home mom): blue jeans.
There's something about an old pair of blue jeans - the comfort just can't be beat. Well, it's hard to believe, but blue jeans turn 135 years old today. That's right, the patent for blue jeans was obtained in 1873 by Levi Strauss and Jacob Davis. You can read all about it on History.com or on the Wikipedia. You can also learn about the history of blue jeans on the Jeans and Accessories site or the Levi Strauss site. Continue Reading |

If you work from home and own your own business, then you may also have to deal with workaholism.
More than ever, home business owners are struggling with overwork. When your office is just a few doors away from your bedroom it's easy to get too caught up in your work and not even realize it. Continue Reading |

We're starting a series here at Work From Home Momma on Business Basics. Several times a week we will focus on providing an overview of some business basics for the self-employed and small business owner.
I was inspired to start this series because I know that a lot of us who work at home started our business based on a particular skill. Often that skill is not what would traditionally be considered a business skillset. Continue Reading |

These surveys come out every year around Mother's Day. Basically, they add up all the jobs that mothers do and figure out how much you would have to pay to get someone to do all of that work.
The result is always a pretty impressive figure. This year the study is at WNBC.com. Continue Reading |

According to a recent article from The New York Times, the number of self-employed persons located away from urban areas has increased by 240% over the past forty years.
The same article goes on to say, "if the current trend continues, one in three rural workers will be self-employed by 2015." The New York Times piece didn't specify which country the study applied to, but I'm assuming that it's talking about the U.S. since The New York Times is a U.S. newspaper. It would be interesting to see what the statistic is for other countries. Continue Reading |

On Friday, May 2nd, Myanmar (a small country bordered on the right by Thailand) was struck by colossal winds and waves. Thousands of homes were destroyed. Thousands of lives were lost.
The destruction was the work of Cyclone Nargis, the most devastating storm to strike the tiny country in years. Even now, the nations are rushing to help the tiny country. (You can read more about the relief effort in this article from CNN.com.) Continue Reading |

A recent experience really opened my eyes to the importance of Customer Service.
This morning I had to contact a few businesses. In nearly every case, I was trying to get payment details so that I could send the business money. In every case, I was unable to get through to speak to a live person and had to leave a message so that I could get a call back. Now, instead being able to wrap up my business in less than an hour, I will be interrupted this afternoon five times as each business calls me back at THEIR convenience. Continue Reading |

This is my May goal-setting post.
I didn't manage to a goal-setting post in April at all. My last goal was posted in March and it had to do with be careful about the comments I made in e-mails and on blogs. I thought that I did a pretty good job of being careful with my comments and e-mails in March and April. (If you haven't been following this series, each month I've been posting a challenge and then reporting on my success in meeting that challenge. The whole series was inspired by this post over at Work It Mom! May is a stressful month for me for a number of reasons. I'm starting the month sick. The kids will be getting out of school. Relatives are coming to visit. Continue Reading |
