8 Drawbacks of Working From Home
I typically post here about the advantages of working from home. I still feel very privileged to be able to do work that I enjoy and stay at home while doing it.

But, working from home is not all a bed of roses. There are some definite drawbacks, so today I thought I'd post a few of them.

Now, I could have made this list up entirely by myself, but I decided to ask some others in the work-at-home community for their feedback instead.

Since I know that a lot of participants in the new Social Media craze, Twitter, work from home, I decided to pose the question on Twitter. (Thanks to all my fellow Twitterers for their participation...)

I quickly got some responses. Here's some of what the Twitterers said about work from home drawbacks (I've used the Twitter names here, but I encourage you to follow the links to their blogs and get to know them better):

  1. GeekGal of Geek Habitat mentioned that working at home can be noisy. She specifically mentioned toddler noise. It's true, if you have children at home, then there will be noise. She also mentioned that you get less breaks when you work from home - a fact that I think is true because the line between work and home tends to blur.

  2. Divapalooza of Domestic Divapalooza brought up a drawback that I've dealt with a few times myself: interruptions. If I had a dime for every time the doorbell rang...

  3. DebNg of Freelance Writing Jobs described how other's demands on your time can be a distraction because "they think that you can drop what you're doing." I know that I've had people ask me to run errands during the day.

  4. evansmom of the VTOR blog listed her own downside to working at home: "fully stocked kitchen, eyes drawn to Xmas tree needles under TV cabinet instead of paid work ... cat demanding food..." I can relate to that. No matter how much I get done, there's always more to do.

  5. slpowell of Lost in the Words mentioned the lack of adult socialization as one of the drawbacks to working from home (and I know that she's not the only one that feels that way. Loneliness is often an issue that WAHMs face.)

  6. blemmet of Writing From The Trenches agreed that home workers often have trouble getting others to respect their time. Then blemmet started to list all of the people in her life who expect her to do errands for them during the day. (What WAHM hasn't got a call from a friend or relative asking for a favor?)

  7. jenweissman of The Mote, The Who and The Goose dislikes the constant reminder of undone housework (dishes and laundry). Who doesn't have at least some undone household chores (I say as the stack of unfolded laundry beckons to me)?

  8. SHurleyHall of Get Paid to Write Online described the lack of respect people have for those who work at home. She also dislikes phone interruptions. (Why won't those telemarketers leave us alone?)

What about you? What do you think is the biggest drawback to working from home?

Leave a comment and let us know.

Thanks for including my comment, Laura. Working at home isn't all sweetness and light. It's a refreshing change to look at the drawbacks as well.

Thanks for chipping in Sharon! I think we tend to glamorize working from home, when in fact, it's hard work.
Hopefully, this post will help to provide some balance.

Thanks for including my thouhts, Laura. Lots of good comments from the twitter folks! I agree with them all and yet, I love working from home. Now, back to making dinner, writing articles, playing Candy Land and keeping the dog bones out of the baby's mouth.

I'd have to agree with all of them even though I do love being able to work from home. The worst part for me though is that no matter how well I do or how professional I am, 90% of friends and family continue to give me this look any time I make a comment about my work like they're indulging a poor simpleton who believes their hobby is a career.

True, I'm only paying a couple of small bills at the moment, but I've been at it less than a year so far. It does take time to build.

Now off to put up that stack of dishes and make dinner before finishing off the orders for today.

Hi Jen and Misses E.!

I think most of us agree that we love working from home. However, there are some drawbacks that others (who might be envious) don't always think about.

I think this post balances things a little. Hopefully...

My biggest pet peeve is getting people to understand that work is WORK no matter if you're sitting behind a corporate desk or on your lawn with your laptop. When you work from home you have the same committments as others, and they should be honored as such.

The hardest distraction I have - laundry and dishes. I think that it is so quick to get it done, but then I get myself sidetracked and work goes out the window.

I have slowly learned that work needs to be work.

I think the 'getting others to respect your time' is the worst for me. I end up with so many people and things distracting me and expecting me to do things that they wouldn't if I were working someplace else.

Hi Bridget, Dannie, and Trisha!

It's easy to get distracted. I understand the respect issue too. I think I still have relatives who have no idea that I'm working.

Interruptions are my big thing...my parents don't understand that I only have a certain amount of time to work and constantly interrupt. We are living with them right now for two weeks and I have not gotten anything done.

Hi Pickel!

I'm sorry to hear about your current situation, but at least you know that it is temporary.
