How To Make Sure That You Get Paid
One of the biggest struggles that home business owners face, but rarely talk about, is getting paid in a timely fashion.

Over at Home Biz Notes, Guest Blogger Jean Murray, has provided some great Tips For Getting Paid. (Jean also blogs at Small Business Boomers and The Thriving Writer).

One of the hats that you take on when you operate your own business is that of collections department. This is an area that many freelancers are uncomfortable with, but in order to succeed you must devise a strategy for getting paid.

Two strategies that I've developed that seem to be effective include:

Do Entrepreneurship and Education Go Hand In Hand?
According to a study quoted in Sharon McLoone's column at the washingtonpost.com, women entrepreneurs have more education than other women who work.

I'm not sure what's causing the statistics, although I did look at the overview of the Small Businesss Administration report that the statistics are from.

Could it be possible that the flexible hours that go along with self-employment make it easier for women to pursue advanced degrees?

Working Sick
One of the disadvantages of working from home is that there is no such thing as a sick day. An illness can mean missing a deadline, missing income, or even losing a client.

Of course, even some working folks don't get paid when they're sick. I found this post at the Anti 9 to 5 Guide. According to the post there are millions of US workers that don't get paid sick days either.

I've been very fortunate over the years that I've been freelancing to not get sick very often. I can only remember a couple of times that I've been sick for more than a day or two. Occasionally, I do get sick though, which can make working on my projects a struggle.

Currently, I've been fighting a bronchitis-like virus for about a week. (Yes, I know that it's starting to feel like spring in a lot of places, but apparently my immune system doesn't know it.) Unfortunately, this illness comes at a time of fairly heavy deadlines that I agreed to a month ago. I don't want to miss an obligation, so I've been working sick this week.

While I fully expect to recover, in the meantime working sick is not fun at all.

If it happens to you, then here are some tips to help you deal with it:

How Will the Economic Stimulus Package Affect You?
I blogged about the Economic Stimulus packager earlier this year, but now it appears that the stimulus rebate checks are on their way for many taxpayers.  Over at SavvySugar, they have published an updated schedule of when you can expect your payment

For some, that payment could arrive as early as Monday, April 28th!

To tell you the truth, I'm not sure exactly how the economic stimulus will impact most home businesses.

I know that there are a lot of work-at-home folks in the Twitter community, so I decided to use my Twitter account to conduct an informal poll.

Today Is Earth Day!
One of my readers, Trisha over at Ideas for Women ( http://www.ideasforwomen.com/news/) dropped me a note yesterday to remind me that Earth Day was coming. Since I often do learn about special days after the fact (for example, I completely missed last week's Blogger Appreciation Day), I really appreciated the reminder.

In this case, however, I did already have Earth Day marked on my calendar as the topic for a post. (By, the way, Trisha has a great Earth Day post up today. You can read it here (http://www.ideasforwomen.com/news/environment/2008/04/21/166/) ).

eMoms-At-Home Becomes The SparkPlugging Network: New Network Review
(I normally don't post blog network reviews on Work From Home Momma, but in this instance I'm making an exception since the founder of this blog network is one of the Internet's foremost work-at-home moms.)

The greatest successes often involve change, risk, and taking chances.

I believe that is what is going on with Wendy Piersall's web presence, which began as the blog eMoms At Home and morphed into a blog network last summer.

Today, the eMoms At Home took one more step towards becoming even more successful (and more inclusive) by evolving into the Sparkplugging network - a full-fledged blogging network with a business channel and a lifestyle channel.

Can Twitter Combat Work-At-Home Loneliness?
Those who work at home frequently list loneliness, or lack of adult conversation, as one of the problems that they face. It's true that being home by yourself, or with only your kids, can sometimes cause a home office worker to feel isolated.

Loneliness can be especially prevalent for those home office workers who have been accustomed to working in an office environment with other adults in the past.

8 Drawbacks of Working From Home
I typically post here about the advantages of working from home. I still feel very privileged to be able to do work that I enjoy and stay at home while doing it.

But, working from home is not all a bed of roses. There are some drawbacks, so today I thought I'd post a few of them.

Now, I could have made this list up entirely by myself, but I decided to ask some others in the work-at-home community for their feedback instead.

Is Coworking The Next Stage of Telecommuting?

Is Coworking The Next Stage of Telecommuting?

CNN thinks that it is.

The CNN feature story describes a "new" trend in telecommuting that involves taking the work outside of the home in order to benefit from interaction with other telecommuters. The trend is known as "coworking."

Are the coworkers returning to the traditional office setting? Not on your life!

Instead, they are headed to central locations with officelike environments. Driven by isolation and the need to interact with others, some telecommuters are embracing coworking as way to overcome feelings of isolation and benefit from the camaraderie of an office-type environment.

What Job is the Most Flexible?
I found this list of the ten "most flexible" careers on Yahoo! Education. (By flexible, they mean that the job offers employees the opportunity to set their own hours and/or the opportunity to work from home or to share a job.)

It's interesting to me that four of the jobs listed (medical transcriptionist, database administrator, software developer, and graphic designer) are jobs that we've discussed already here at Work From Home Momma.
