In case you're like me and it's been a few years since you've had math, Pi represents the ratio of a circle's circumference to it's diamers. You can read all about Pi on the Wikipedia. If you homeschool, today would be a great day to study Pi. The number is approximately equal to 3.141...
Pi Day itself was invented over twenty years ago by a physicist at the San Francisco Exploratorium. The story of Pi Day makes an interesting read (and might make an interesting homeschool assignment). Here's the exploratorium page that describes it. Pi Day even has its own website. You can visit that site here.
Mathematics is important, especially if you are in business. In a large corporation, there may be others in the company who have the responsibility for some of the more mathematically oriented tasks such as estimating, billing, and bookkeeping. As a sole proprietor, however, you likely wear many hats. The mathematically-oriented tasks suddenly become your own.
I have to admit, Math was not my favorite subject when I was in school. (It's not my kids' favorite subject either.) However, Math is an important part of running a business and I'm now grateful to all of those Math teachers who had the patience to make sure that I grasped the concepts.
If it takes something like Pi Day to get kids and others excited about Math - well, so be it. I think it's worthwhile.
What about you? Have you ever heard of Pi Day? Do you like Math?
