It's popular these days to talk about online businesses. Every blog that I visit seems to have an online business suggestion (or two, or three). It seems as though everyone wants to work online.
However, online businesses are not the only way to work from home. There are many types of service businesses that you can operate from home, as this post from Tom at The Home Business Archive reminds us. If you're wondering what type of home business you would like to get involved in, Tom's post is worth taking a look at.
(Many of Tom's suggestions involve services that you might perform away from home, but your business is headquartered from home.)
Tom specifically mentions pet-sitting and I've actually known a woman who made a pretty nice living as a pet-sitter. I've also known a woman who worked as a house-sitter (her clients took extended trips or had jobs that required travel).
What other jobs could you manage from your home that don't necessarily require an online presence? ![]()
- Handywoman - Are you good at fixing things? If so, there may be a career in it for you. Try placing some ads in local newspapers.
- Caterer - If cooking is your thing and you have some professional experience, you might look into setting up a catering business. (Make sure that you have exceptional cooking equipment.)
- Tutor - If you have a teaching background, or a subject that you are strong in, you may be able to help a student learn. Contact your local high school or college campus to ask if you can advertise your services.
- Gift Baskets - If you're the crafty sort, then you may be able to create gift baskets and sell them at art and craft shows.
- Independent Realtor or Insurance Agent - If you have experience in either of these professions, then you may be able to start your own business.
- Private Music Teacher - If you play an instrument well or have had voice training, then you may be able to give lessons.

I'll never forget one offline business - retail store. It's our family biz. Although I've always thought that I'm bad in direct selling, I'm actually considering putting up one when I save enough money from my online projects.
Having a good mix of online and offline sources of income makes some happier at times.
