It's shocking, but according to the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute it's the truth.
As a work-at-home mom (WAHM), you may be at risk! If you're not personally affected by heart disease, chances are that someone you know will be. If you live in the United States (U.S.), then you can check heart disease facts for your state by clicking here. I was surprised to learn that, in my state, heart disease and stroke accounted for 35% of all female deaths in 2003. That's one in three!
February is American Heart Month and today is National Wear Red Day. Women everywhere are encouraged to wear red to raise awareness about heart disease. It's a small step, but its an important one to start a conversation that may save a life.
What else can you do?
The Go Red For Women website is full of activities and information about women and heart disease, so you'll want to check that out. I did and I found healthy recipes, exercise advice, an interview with Marie Osmond, and more.
What else can we, as WAHMs, do?
- Eat healthy
- Exercise
- Get regular checkups
- Talk to your doctor about a family history of heart disease
- Educate our daughters about heart disease
The good news is that we can fight heart disease through research, healthy lifestyles, and early treatment.
You can read more about National Wear Red Day at the Know More Media blog.
What about you? Will you wear red today?

Yeah, I heard about this news that heart disease kills more American women than any other disease before. I think women should take care of themselves a lot. Yoga, I think it is a very very good choice for women. And this book, I think, it is also very helpful for women to prevent heart attacks:
