Do You Take a Nap During The Day?
It's time to 'fess up. Do you take a nap during the day?

Mary Emma over at Home Biz Notes wants to know.

As a work-at-home mom taking a cat nap during the day is a very big temptation. It's especially a temptation if I'm operating on a sleep deficit because I've stayed up late the night before. When I feel like taking a nap, it's because I'm just so tired. Do you feel the same?

If you do, then you're not alone. In fact, sleep deprivation is a major problem in our society. We're all just so very busy!

As work-at-home moms, we've eliminated one aspect that robs many of sleep - the daily commute. However, other projects often crop up to take our time.

Not getting sleep can become a self-perpetuating cycle. That's because not getting enough sleep affects our performance. So, if you stay up late one night to meet a deadline, then chances are that your performance will be slower the next day and might again require you to stay up light to meet your deadline.
Sleep deprivation is a vicious cycle that puts you on a path towards failure as you get further and further behind.

What can you do?

Take some steps to avoid missing sleep. Here are five simple measures that you can implement into your routine:
  1. Try to go to bed and wake up at the same time each day.

  2. If you must work late to meet deadlines or take care of a sick child, take some of the next day off.

  3. Make sure that you take at least one day off each week to recharge.

  4. Keep a calendar and pencil in your obligations. Avoid overscheduling yourself.

  5. Eat right and get exercise.
Note: If you are consistently having ongoing problems with excessive tiredness or having trouble falling asleep, then check with your physician to make sure that there isn't an underlying medical condiation.

What about you? Do you get enough sleep?

I do try to take a nap when my 17 month old son does usually, But some days I just have too much work. But about 3-4 days out of the week I do take a nap!! They help me.

Hi Working at Home Mom!

Thanks for sharing. I think you are wise to sleep when your son does. I did something similar when my girls were babies.

I must admit that I do nap occasionally, but only when insomnia gets the best of me and I am sleep deprived. There are also days when I spend too much time in front of my computer before taking a break and my brain needs time to refresh before getting on with work. I don't always take a nap during those times but I do meditate or something to get back in focus.

Hi Kimberlee!

Thanks for sharing. I think we're a sleep-deprived nation. Sometimes there are medical reasons for loss of sleep, but too often it's just busyness.

I sometimes feel like taking a nap. Not because I feel lazy or anything, but because, just like you all said, fatigue gets to me. Mostly it's deadlines (meaning work) and every once in awhile a movie (at home). The thing that bothers me the most when taking a nap during the day is waking up - I always wake up feeling dizzy and my sense of orientation being completely out of place. I usually catch up fast 'cause my kids need me for something or they're up to something.

Hi Kpriss!

I certainly understand being tired. As far as the dizziness, I'm not sure what to tell you about it. It might be a good idea to ask a doctor. One drawback for me is that if I sleep too long during the day I wake up feeling drowsy.

Thanks Laura ;)
It's usually my husband telling me it's all in my head and that I should take more daytime naps because there's nothing wrong with that :)

Maybe I should check with myself if that dizzy-something isn't from my resenting the naps in question.

It can be tough when you have really small children. I know that they can drain a lot of energy from you. Don't worry about taking your naps if you feel you need the sleep, then you probably do.
