Today is one of those days that only happens every once in while.
Literally.
You see, today is leap year. Leap year only happens every four years. Leap years were created so that the calendar and the solar year are more closely aligned. Without leap year, the calendar would gain an entire day every four years.
If you homeschool, a study of the history of leap year might make an interesting topic. Here is more information (from other sites) for you to learn about leap year:

Universal health care is a huge issue right now in the United States (U.S.) for a good reason. There are some Americans that really have trouble finding an insurance plan that they can afford.
The problem of finding affordable health insurance is a common one for the self-employed. Since they don't work for a large corporation, they may not be eligible for a group insurance plan.
Yet, having health insurance for yourself and your family is vital. Without health insurance, a single illness or medical procedure could spell financial ruin for your family.
The best health insurance deals are usually found under a group policy. Even then, health insurance is usually not cheap. (Our family pays over $600 a month to insure the four of us through the group plan offered by my husband's employer.)
If you're looking for health insurance options, then this post provides some ideas.

Whether you are just starting your home business or you are a veteran of working from home, there are some crucial areas that you must pay attention to if your business is to survive.
It's a well-known fact that a large number of businesses fail, and many of them are home businesses.

As a work-at-home mom taking a cat nap during the day is a very big temptation. It's especially a temptation if I'm operating on a sleep deficit because I've stayed up late the night before. When I feel like taking a nap, it's because I'm just so tired. Do you feel the same?

Recently, I was tagged for a meme by Yvonne Russell of Know More Media's own Small Biz Mentor. While I don't like to spend a lot of posting space here participating in memes, I thought that I'd do this one because it gives us the opportunity to get to know one another better.

Every once in a while I get a client who wants me to do a "rush" project for him or her. Typically, I don't mind helping a client out on short notice if I can. How do you handle rush jobs in your business? Do you charge extra? Do you turn them down?

One of the things that amazed me when I started working from home about six years ago is how truly busy I was then (and still am). I guess that I initially thought that by cutting out my two hours of commuting each day I would somehow get more disretionary time. Alas, it was not to be. The time that I don't spend working on my business I spend running errands for my family or managing my household.
Of course, every parent is busy. It comes with the territory. In fact, I'm sure that many (if not all) parents would describe themselves as busy (if not extremely busy).

I have to start this post by explaining that I've been very fortunate. I have had very little experience with bad clients during that time that I've had my own business. (Perhaps because I am very cautious about who I will accept as a client.) However, if you have a bad client experience, why not get it off your chest now? Why not describe your experience in the comments so that we can all share your pain (and learn from it).
Not everyone is so fortunate. This post at FreelanceSwitch, where a freelancer's payment was reversed out of her PayPal account AFTER she delivered the work, makes it very clear that bad clients are out there.

Yesterday many top eBay sellers went on strike in order to protest a new fee structure and other changes that the company announced recently.
Some of the changes include: no negative feedback from buyers, a new fee structure that many sellers feel is less favorable.

One of the most frequently asked questions that I receive is: how do you find work that you can do from home?
Personally, I learned how to find my work-from-home projects through a combination of persistence and good fortune. However, I know that I would have found it helpful when I was starting out if someone had created a list of sites that hire home-based workers. So, here's the list that I wish I'd had when I started out.

One the questions that would be work-at-home moms ask frequently is: do you need a college degree to work at home?
The question is echoed all over the blogosphere. You can find it being asked in forums, in blog posts (such as this one by Jennifer Mattern at BizAmmo.com), and even on online discussions (such as this one at The Business of Software).
In fact, I probably see this question more than any other question.
Everyone has their own opinion on this topic, of course, and their own stories to tell.

Perhaps you should.
They may be at one of the Top 5 Social Networking Sites for Tweens, a list published at mom logic.
If your kids are online (and if they are anything like my kids, then they probably are), then you should take precautions to make sure that they are safe. The United States (U.S.) Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has actually published a list of social networking safety tips for tweens and teens. The list is a great starting point for talking to your kids about online safety. The FTC also has a guide for parents.

If you're in business for yourself, sooner or later you're going to have to do it. You're going to have to make a sales presentation. It may be in writing. It may be an oral presentation. It may be formal. It may be informal. But, if you want to keep your business alive, then you're going to have to learn to sell.
Sales. For those of us who aren't natural-born salespeople, the very word is enough to send a shudder down our spines. When I hear the word, every bad cliche of a sales person comes to mind. I picture a checkered suit, high-pressure tactics, or even a bait and switch scenario.
Sales doesn't have to be like that. I've learned to sell my services for my business and you can too.

As a mom, let alone as a small business owner, I know what stress is. You probably do too.
You've probably heard, as I have, about some of the negative side effects of stress. If you're like me, you've thought that many of the side effects are largely due to the habits that we pick up when we are stressed. Habits like not eating right, smoking, not exercising, not getting enough sleep, and so on.
New evidence is in, however, that shows that stress might actually damage the brain directly.

If you live in the United States, then you're probably in the process of getting your income tax records together. The final income tax filing deadline isn't until April 15th, but since our family usually gets a refund we like to do them in February.

Managing e-mail is one of my own-going challenges. Just before typing this post, I had to delete over 100 spammy e-mail messages.
It's not just the spam that's troublesome, however. It's also dealing with "real" e-mails from people who are trying to reach me. What's the best way to organize those messages? Should I create a folder for every single e-mail that I want to save? At the end of this post I'll let you know how I did with January's goal, in the meantime I'm going to let you in on February's goal: to handle my e-mail more effectively.
What is the best way to handle the onslaught of e-mail, which can be overwhelming?
I decided to gather some resources about managing e-mail, and here's what I found:

Whether you're an avid football fan (or just someone who is patient with those who are), you've probably realized by now that tomorrow is the Super Bowl.
The Super Bowl is one of the most watched sporting events of the year. You can learn all about the Super Bowl at its official site. There's also a spotlight on the Super Bowl at History.com. You can also read about the Super Bowl on the Wikipedia. If you're a home schooling mom looking for an interesting project for your sports-minded kids, a report on the history of the Super Bowl might be a fun and educational project.

Heart disease kills more American women than any other disease, accident, or tragedy.
It's shocking, but according to the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute it's the truth.
As a work-at-home mom (WAHMs), you may be at risk! If you're not personally affected by heart disease, chances are that someone you know will be. If you live in the United States (U.S.), then you can check heart disease facts for your state by clicking here. I was surprised to learn that, in my state, heart disease and stroke accounted for 35% of all female deaths in 2003. That's one in three!
