When you are in business, you're eventually going to make a mistake. No matter how good you are, sooner or later, it's going to happen. (Naturally, you should take every precaution to prevent mistakes from happening, though.)
The thought process that Randa describes in her post is exactly what many freelancers and small business owners go through when they discover that they have made a mistake. I think that Randa is exactly right in the way that she handled it.
Honesty, I think, is the really the only way to deal with mistakes. Possibly, there are a few clients who would drop you for making a mistake, but I believe that most of them will appreciate that you cared enough to let them know.
It happened to me recently. I was doing a different type of writing - a type of project that I hadn't done for several years. I finished my project, ran the spellchecker on it, proofread it forwards and backwards, and then submitted it to the client. I was really excited and happy about finishing it. I was so sure that it was perfect.
Later that evening I excitedly showed the piece to my husband. As I was reading over his shoulder I noticed not one, but two, typos. I was horrified. I do confess that there was a minute or two when I wondered if I really needed to bother my client with the mistake. However, I did let the client know about it and I believe that they appreciated it.
What about you? Have you ever found a mistake in your work? How have you dealt with it?
