Lego's 50th birthday has gotten me to think about their product and why it has remained so popular. I've come up with a list of ten marketing strategies/product features that have kept Lego bricks on top in the toy market. Any home business owner can look at this list and see how their own products, or services, measure up.
Here it is, the Lego checklist:
- They started with a simple idea
- Made it easy to use
- Colorful
- Offered it in many different varieties
- At a wide variety of locations
- The product taps into the creativity of its users
- The products don't become obsolete
- There are versions of the product for different age groups (think Duplo for younger children, Mindstorms for older children or adults)
- The product was kept updated (think Bionicle and Mindstorm)
- The product is associated with popular locations (Legos at DownTown Disney, or in the Mall of America)
