As a mom whose kids have attended baseball games, the thought of Major League players using steroids maks me sick. Mitchell Report, or no Mitchell Report, using drugs to get ahead is wrong. It's cheating and it's abusing your body. The fact that this problem has proven to be widespread in Major League Baseball makes me want to run over to box office that we bought tickets through for the last few years and demand a refund.
These players are definitely not the heroes we want to hold up for our kids to emulate. As kids my brothers and I collected baseball cards. One of my brothers played in little league. I have six nephews and I know that many of them love baseball. Kids in our family have always looked up to baseball players.
The whole point of taking kids to sports and encouraging kids to play sports is to help them learn about good sportsmanship. Sports can help kids learn a valuable life lesson and have fun doing it. But, that's not the lesson that will come out of today's report.
The lesson that will come out today is that your own skill isn't really good enough. The lesson that will come out is that cheating is a way to get ahead. The lesson that will come out is that you can abuse your body and still perform.
Frankly, as a mother, these aren't lessons that I want my kids or kids in my family to learn.
To the Major League Baseball players, owners, and managers - clean up your act! America's children are watching.
What about you? How do you feel about the Mitchell Report results?
