Social Media Secrets: A WAHM's Guide to Getting the Most From Social Networking
Over at Marketing Should Be Fun Calvin Warr wants to know my tips for making social networking effective and manageable. This is THAT post.

Social Media has become almost an Internet cliche. It's often one of the first things that small business owners who are considering marketing their business online hear about.

"So, you're taking your business online - you'll want to get up to speed on social media." At least, this is a common piece of advice that home business owners hear.

In fact, social media and social networking have become so popular that there's even a blog/community dedicated to following social networking trends, Mashable. If you wonder what's the latest in social networking, then Mashable's the place for you.

What is social media or social networking? Social media is media that allows the general Internet population to participate by submitting information and graphics. Social networking can be described as the act of using social media.

The truth is, to a small business owner, social media and social networking can be daunting. The sheer volume of social media out there is overwhelming. Calvin's question is a timely one.

So what are some of the social media secrets, and how can your home business take advantage of them?

1. The targeted approach.

Focus most, if not all, of your efforts on a few social media - preferrably those that your clients and prospective clients frequent. Many colleges have got this concept down to an art by creating a presence on Facebook and MySpace.

A drawback to this approach is that you may miss out on reaching small groups of potential clients at other social media.

2. The branding approach.

This approach views social networking as a part of your company's branding. Consistency is an important theme with this approach. No matter what social media you sign up under, always use the same user name and avatar. The user name and avatar should be easily identified with your business. (A logo works.)

A drawback to this approach is that your participation in a large number of social media will likely be shallow and lack any real relationship.

3. The organic approach.

Using the approach, you enter the world of social networking as yourself and participate only in those social media that truly interest you. You build relationships with like-minded individuals. Your business is just a part of who you are.

A drawback to this approach is that your interests may not match those of potential clients and customers.

4. The power user approach.

In this approach to social media, you attempt to become a power user of a particular social media. An example of this would be someone who deliberately sets out to become one of Digg's Top 100 users or one of the 20 Top Sphinners.

A drawback to this approach is that the goal of becoming a power user can conflict with the goal of positively promoting your business.

5. The balanced approach.

With this approach you dedicate a certain amount of time each day, let's say an hour, to social networking. When your hour for social networking is over, you move on to the rest of your daily activities.

A drawback to this approach is that it may become a shotgun approach with lots of effort and no real results.

What's the best approach for your home business? The truth is that most home business owners will benefit from a combination of approaches to social networking.

This is the post that I wish had existed a year ago when I started to become active on social networks.

Great post, Laura, and I agree with your different takes on the approaches. It is really hard to figure out what works best but your points have given me much food for thought.

wow! that is a really good run down on the different approaches. Every way seems to be the right way, and every way the wrong way. In the end, you are right, we should adopt some kind of combination, but I would guess not all 5 of them! :)

Thanks Denise! I'm glad that you found the post helpful.

Hi Calvin! I agree that coming up with an effective approach can be confusing. However, I don't think that there's a "one size fits all" strategy. Each business must determine what works best for them.

There is a specific approach for each industry - the art is to identify it. This entry identifies the main techniques, yet there are many combinations possible. I am pro "balanced approach" - probably because I seek balance. But Laura, this is the best entry of its kind I've ever read.

Hi Mihaela!

That's a good point about the method of social networking being specific to your type of industry.

Laura,

I like how you broke the different approaches of social media.

I would agree that going on and signing up for any social media site that is brought to you can be a bit "dangerous" because you then run the risk of burning out and then not going back to any of them very much. Been there too and it can become overwhelming.

So, I like the idea of being more targeted to what YOUR purpose is FOR being a part of these social media sites.

I see the advantage of a Power User approach...that is one way to get yourself out there...however, boy is that ALOT of work! And like you said, you may become the "Top 20____" which is great but it may not benefit the promotion of your business, however, it would have others know you better.

For me, I like to take the approach of being social and personable on these sites...just like I am in my business. I also like to focus my social media efforts on a few social media sites and get to know some of the people and get conversations, relationships going.

One of the things I do for my clients is create a social media schedule. I discuss with my client what their purpose is for being a part of the social media sites. Then, we schedule times and/or days (like you mentioned) to network on those places that would work better for them. We start small and then move to others if wanted or needed.

Thanks again Laura!

Wow Teresa!

Thanks for your thoughtful response. I appreciate your ideas, especially the idea of a social media schedule.

Social Networking website is a site that you (generally) sign up for as a member, where you can 'meet' other individuals from all four corners of the globe, who share an interest in whatever the basic 'theme' or 'topic' of the site is.

It is a site that allows you to interact with anyone and everyone who is online, and who shares your interest in almost anything!

Most of these sites require only the most basic knowledge of a PC and the Internet to work with as well. This simplicity hugely enhances their accessibility, as there is no 'techno-babble' in the way of joining in.

In addition to being easy to navigate, the best social networking websites also make it so much easier to make new friends online, by ensuring that the people who are site members are of a like mind, with matching interests.
