Across the United States many flags will be flown at half mast. Some cities will hold commemorative ceremonies. An Associated Press story reported at CNN.Com describes the dedication of the new memorial for the USS Oklahoma, the first naval ship to be hit by a torpedo on that fateful day.
Pearl Harbor Day has a special significance for me. My father, who recently passed away, was a World War II veteran (along with two of my uncles). World War II caused these young men to mature and grow up very quickly.
You may, or may not, have experienced a world-changing event personally. However, that doesn't mean that you can't learn life lessons from those events. This is one reason, in my opinion, why it's important for us and for our children to learn and study history.
As you and your children explore each historic event ask yourselves these questions:
- How did this event affect me?
- How did this event affect the country?
- How did this event affect the future?
What about you? Did World War II touch the lives of your family?

"Dec. 7th, 1941..." I think these words stay in the hearts and minds of those who lived in the 40's. But for me, I understand the suffering and horror of this war through the movie"Pearl Harbor", which was the blockbuster of 2001. I think I was blown away by this movie. The actual attack scenes in it are incredible. Lots of CGI and special effects in it are so seamless and flawless that it brought us back the feeling of hate and sorrow towards every angle of World War II. Here is the movie I found: http://dealstudio.com/searchdeals.php?deal_id=72467 , I think this movie is a great choice for homeschool moms.
