Tonight is the start of Hanukkah. Hanukkah is also called the Festival of Lights, the Feast of Dedication, or the Feast of the Maccabees. The holiday commemorates a miracle that occurred when the Maccabees reclaimed the temple in Jerusalem from the Greeks. The Maccabees lit the ceremonial lamp in the temple with only enough oil to last for one day, however the oil miraculously burned for eight days instead. Today, adherents of the Jewish faith light a candle every evening of Hanukkuh - one candle for each of the eight days that the candle burned.
In addition to the candle burning, there are many other traditions surrounding Hanukkah, including the use of the tzedakah box to collect money for charity. (You can read more about the tzedakah box at USA Today.)
To learn even more about Hanukkah go to The History Channel site, to Know More Media's feature article, How to Spell Hanukkah? Chanukah? Hanukah? The Data Speaks for Itself, or to the Wikipedia article on Hanukkah. (Homeschooling moms, this would make a great study for children of any faith. I loved learning about different histories and traditions when I was young.)![]()
What does the onset of Hanukkah mean for your business?
First and foremost, I think that home business owners should be aware that this celebration is going on. Home business owners of other faiths may not realize that these days represent a special time to their Jewish clients and business contacts. It's a good idea not to schedule any company or client meetings or events during this period of time.
Also, if your company gives out Christmas bonuses you may want to give out your bonuses a little earlier this year.
What about you? Is this your holiday? If so, Happy Hanukkah. I'd love to hear more about this holiday from you.
