Since I left the corporate world to work at home, I've rarely looked back.
Somehow today is a bit different. Maybe it's the season or maybe it's the great new blog for entrepreneurs that I've been reading, Escape from Cubicle Nation (a great resource, by the way). Suddenly I remember a lot of things that I don't miss about the corporate world.
Here are some of them:
- The 45 minute commute that becomes a two-hour commute every single time that it rains or snows.
- The sick coworker who valiantly refuses to stay at home and coughs repeatedly in your face.
- The annual company Christmas gift. (How many paperweights with the corporate name and logo on it can you use?)
- Paper thin cubicle walls that allow you to hear every word of your coworker's argument with their spouse.
- Paper thin cubicle walls that allow you to hear every word when your coworker makes up with their spouse.
- The annual corporate layoff. (Now you see the employees, now you don't.)
- Your annual performance review, where the boss tells you what your career goals are.
- The mandatory "voluntary" company Christmas party, coupled with the mandatory "voluntary" gift for your boss.
- The company vending machine with only one unappetizing stale selection - beef jerky.
- Standing up in your cubicle and being able to see into every other coworker's office.
- Panty hose and high heels.
- The company meeting where the boss passes out a handout and then proceeds to read it to you, word-for-word, for the entire meeting.
- Corporate politics.
- Paying twenty-five dollars to park your car within walking distance of the building where you work.
- The notorious job description - whatever it is, it's in your job description and not in the job description of whoever you are asking.
What about you? Are the things that you don't miss about the corporate world? Why not share them?
