A New Year, New Goals - One Step at a Time

With 2008 starting in just a few days, now is a good time for every home business to review their goals and objectives and create new ones, if necessary.

(This post is an entry in the Getting Things Done contest sponsored by the Pimp Your Work blog. Thanks to Mary Emma at HomeBizNotes for making me aware of this particular group writing project.)

My feed readers already know that I'm a To Do list kind of person. It usually takes a list (or two) just to get me through a day. However, I typically resist setting New Year's resolutions.

Why?

Because, in the past, I've set such lofty goals for myself that I've actually set myself up for failure. (Now, normally I know to set realistic goals, but in the frenzy of setting New Year's resolutions I can get caught up in creating a list a mile long of things that I'd like to do, but realistically never will.) Then, in the middle of January (a depressing month for me anyway since I lost my dad in January of last year), I realize that I've already failed.

However, I found a great idea for New Year's resolutions that you can really keep over at Work It Mom. Basically, Nataly posts about picking one small goal for each month of the year.

I really like Nataly's idea. As I read her post I thought to myself, I can do this. I can REALLY do this. I can focus on one thing at a time. I can set and accomplish one goal for each month. In fact, Nataly's post has inspired me to start making New Year's resolutions again.

I'll go even go one step further. I'll not only set a goal each month, I'll blog about it. I'll dedicate one blog post each month to explaining that month's goal. Maybe we can all learn from my resolutions! This post is the first of that series.

My first goal (for January) is to get more work time out of my day. If I can manage to get more accomplished during the work day, I can reduce the number of times that my work day bleeds into my family time in the evening.

How can I accomplish this goal? It's simple. Get up the very first time that the alarm clock rings. I have a bad tendency to keep hitting sleep doze (sometimes five or six times), but I don't really go back to sleep. So, hitting sleep doze is just a time waster. It actually sometimes causes me to start out my work day already a half an hour behind on my schedule.

What about you?

Do you make New Year's resolutions? If so, why not share a few of them? If not, why not?

Hi Nancy!

Thanks for dropping by and sharing your New Year's resolution.

Yeah, 2007 ends, I am looking forward to 2008's spring. I like setting new goals for new year. Last year, I red most worldwide classic literatures. Wuthering Heights, Gone with the Wind, Romeo and Julia, Pride and Prejudice, David Copperfield, The Sun also Rises...too many to name. My favorite is Jane Eyre. Jean's search of freedom, independence, love impacts on me a lot. Those masterpeices widen my scopes of knowledge and open my eyes. And for 2008, I really wanna to travel all around the world to experience what's depicted in books, of course, home journey first, and maybe meet with my Mr. Right with the first sight. I find travel deals/coupons online at http://www.dealstudio.com/viewsavings.php?deal_category_id=23 , I think it is always much cheaper than leaflets that hotel or airline or travel agency. It will help me save plenty of money. And I'm keen on if anyone else are also intersted, we could chat more in private. And I know I will be very busy, even tried by part-time jobs, but I'm still optimistic. Wish me luck!

Hi Lisa Jane!

Thanks for sharing your New Year's resolutions.
