New Years Eve: What's A WAHM to Do?

Today is the last day of 2008! For many small business owners in United States who run their businesses on a calendar year basis, today is also the last day of their fiscal year.

After today, business expenses and income received will likely count towards 2008 taxes. Today it may still be possible for some transactions to count towards your 2007 taxes. (If you have any specific questions, check with your tax accountant or attorney.)

The end of the tax year isn't what many people are worrying about today, though. For many, today is a day of celebration with friends and family.

In addition to parties, there are many specific traditions surrounding the New Year. These traditions vary widely, depending on the country and culture. Mama Lisa's World Blog lists symbolic New Years foods from around the world. The mental_floss blog also lists six New Years traditions from around the world.

Social Media Secrets: A WAHM's Guide to Getting the Most From Social Networking

This is the post that I wish had existed a year ago when I started to become active on social networks.

Social Media has become almost an Internet cliche. It's often one of the first things that small business owners who are considering marketing their business online hear about.

"So, you're taking your business online - you'll want to get up to speed on social media." At least, this is a common piece of advice that home business owners hear.

The truth is, to a small business owner, social media and social networking can be daunting. The sheer volume of social media out there is overwhelming. What are some of the social media secrets, and how can your home business take advantage of them?

Winter Solstice and The First Real Day of Winter
Today is the winter solstice, or equinox. What does that mean? It means that it's the shortest day of the year. It means that tomorrow is the first real day of winter. Homeschoolers might have fun learning some of the scientific facts about the winter solstice on the Wikipedia or at the USA.gov site.

I know for some of you in the northern climates, it's felt like winter for quite a while now. It may be cold where you are, it may even be snowing.

All About To-Do-Lists
As a work-at-home mom (WAHM), you're probably very familiar with these already. In fact you probably use to-do lists a lot. I know that I do.

These days, in fact, if I have a lot to do and I don't write it all down it throws me off a little. It helps me to see a list of what I have left to do and to cross each item off as I get it down.

The Mitchell Report: Cheating Is Cheating

In a few hours the Mitchell Report, a report on the use of steroids and other performance-enhancing drugs in Major League Baseball, will be released. Rumor has it that the report will include the names of some very prominent Major League baseball players.

As a mom whose kids have attended baseball games, the thought of Major League players using steroids maks me sick. Mitchell Report, or no Mitchell Report, using drugs to get ahead is wrong.

This is the time of the year that those affected with S.A.D., or Seasonal Affective Disorder, suffer most. Those who suffer from S.A.D. feel depressed during the winter.

Procrastination - How To Wipe It Out (Plus Link to Funny Video at the End)
If there's one thing that most home business owners struggle with, sooner or later, it's procrastination. When you work alone it's easy to put tasks off and find yourself falling behind on vital tasks.

On thing leads to another, first you check the e-mail, then the voice messages on your business phone, then back to the e-mail. Before you know it an hour, a morning, or even a day is gone.

Left unchecked, procrastination poses a serious threat to your business.

Why Work-At-Home Moms Still Need to Worry About Holiday Parties
One of the things that you escape when you work from home is the annual company Christmas party, right?

Should You Set Your Initial Price Low to Get Clients?

Pearl Harbor Day: U.S. WAHMs Commemorate the 66th Anniversay
Franklin D. Roosevelt called December 7th, 1941 "a date which will live in infamy," and rightly so. Sixty-six years ago today Japanese warplanes attached the United States Naval base at Pearl Harbor. The result: over 2000 Americans died and the U.S. was plunged into World War II. It was one of those events that changed the history of the world. Continue Reading

Do Your Kids Want You At Home? (Share Your Story)
This post, The "or" in priority, from Sheryl at Work It Mom really caught my attention.

It was this statement (from Sheryl's daughter) in her post that got to me: "How come all my friends have more fun money than I do?"

When I first started working from home my eldest was convinced that I had ruined her life. All of the sudden we had to watch our budget as we never had to do before. She wasn't used to saving money at all.

ParentPreneur Edge: Book Review

I received Julie Lenzer Kirk's book, The ParentPreneur Edge, a few weeks ago and am excited to share my book review with you. I interviewed Julie here on Work From Home Momma earlier this fall.

Can parenting give you an edge when it comes to starting your own business? This author seems to thinks so.

Julie's book is based on her own experiences as an entrepreneur and as a parent. Throughout the book she compares the stages of developing her businesses with the developmental stages of her children.
