Work at Home Moms: The Many Hats We Wear
One of my favorite places to network is the forums at WAHM.com. Not only is it a good place to meet other work-at-home moms, but it's also interesting and informative to read about the issues that others face as they run their home businesses.

My most recent visit to the forums there got me thinking about the many roles that we play as work-at-home moms. Not only are there business roles that we must fulfil, there are also parenting roles and responsibilities. To be successful, a work-at-home mom must truly wear many hats.

I thought it might be fun today to list and describe some of the hats that we, as WAHMs, wear. (If you're thinking of working from home, this list might give you a better picture of what it's actually like to be a work-at-home mom.) I've divided the hats we wear into two categories: parenting hats and business hats. (The business hats category is particularly relevent for single proprietors.)

You forgot personal assistant and organization consultant, and most of the parenting list is doubled if you're in a marriage/relationship.

Hi Misses E.!

You're right! I did forget those hats.

Hmm, this is a fantastic list. I think I would add these in the business portion:
Purchasing Agent (gotta buy office supplies); Asset Management/Inventory Control (you have to track all those office supplies); Security Chief (nobody else locks that door when the kids head to the bus); Outreach/Volunteer/Charity Coordinator (for when you volunteer at the Chamber of Commerce rubbish sale or parade). As for the parenting portion - Activities Coordinator (if nothing else it makes those soccer games and gymnastics practices sound like something a hotel would PAY you to schedule); Efficiency Expert (gotta figure out the best way to get to Kinko's, soccer, ballet, Safeway, Costco, back to soccer, back to ballet, through the drive-thru and home again before the baby's bedtime); Risk Management (for those days when you're crawling around on the floor trying to figure out what to stick safety plugs in so the baby won't stick his fingers in it).

wow. We do wear a lot of hats. I think I just scared myself out of working at home any longer. ;-P

Hi Melonie,

Thanks for the additions! I'm getting tired just reading the list. ;-)

I tried to comment on this post yesterday but my toddler kept hitting the ESC button. Pretty smart.

Now that I have all fingers under control, I have to say that this is a really thought-provoking post. I'm printing the list for my DH.

I'd add: Seduction Specialist and Entertainment Manager. I guess that this list could go on and on.

Hi Tammi!

The last two made me chuckle. Yes, I think the list could go on and on.
