As my feed readers know, I've been following the toy recall/toy danger story for several months now. Truthfully, I'm amazed at the amount of dangerous toys that are reaching the marketplace. Childhood should be a happy, carefree time - not a time when toys are constantly being taken away because of toxic components or dangerous parts.
The latest information on the toy safety story is that ToySafety.org has released a list of the "10 Worst Toys." You can also read about the worst toys list on Yahoo.
I took a look at the list, which includes products from the popular TV show Dora the Explorer and from the recent hit movies, Pirates of the Caribbean and Spiderman 3. The potential injuries from these dangerous "toys" range from lead ingestion to choking to electric shock to the potential for eye injuries.
What I want to know is this: what sort of design safety standards do these toy companies adhere to? Do they even think about potential injuries to children, or do they just rush something marketable onto the market as quickly as possible?![]()
This is beginning to be a bit of a rant, but I don't care. This is one area where companies absolutely should not be cutting costs.
Toy companies take note: the price of a toy is far less important than how safe that toy is. As a parent, I'd much rather that the kids have one or two safe, but expensive, toys than a roomful of cheap, dangerous ones.
What about you? How is the toy safety issue affecting your family? Do you think the problem is getting worse, or is it just getting reported more.
