Every year, the question for our family is: should we get flu shots? For the last few years, the answer has been "yes." This year, when I called last month, the doctor's office had not yet gotten their supply of flu vaccine. I'm about to make the call again.
Should you get the flu vaccine? In making this decision the most important thing to do, of course, is consult with your own doctor. He, or she, is familiar with your medical history and can give appropriate advice for your specific situation.
However, if you are like me and are somewhat squeamish about getting the flu shot even when your doctor advises it, here are some compelling reasons why you should do so from the Daily Herald. According to the Mayo Clinic a flu shot is your best insurance against actually getting the flu.
According to The U.S. News and World Report, even some celebrities are encouraging folks to get vaccinated for the flu this year. One of those celebrities is actress Jennifer Garner of the popular television show, Alias. Her involvement is part of the Faces of Influenza campaign sponsored by the American Lung Association.
If your doctor advises the vaccination, it makes business sense too. Consider the following:
- Not only is catching the flu dangerous and uncomfortable, it can mean work lost from your home business
- The flu is extremely contagious. Odds are that if one family member catches it, several will. This means more time lost from work as you care for sick family members.
- Even if you don't become sick enough to stop working, your symptoms are bound to impact your productivity.
What about you? How does your family deal with the threat of the flu season?
