Like most moms I've been watching the growing list of recalled toys with some degree of alarm. The latest toy to be recalled is Curious George plush doll (from the Curious George series of children's books). According to this CBS news story, there is lead in the surface paint of the doll.
Yesterday, the dangerous toy was AquaDots. Today, it's Curious George. A few weeks ago it was Polly Pocket, Winnie the Pooh, or Barbie. What toy will be found unsafe next?
You can view a complete list of toys recalled at the site of the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). In fact, if you will be purchasing holiday gifts for young children, it might be a good idea to print this list off BEFORE you go shopping.
It seems like every day we hear of a new toy being recalled due to safety issues. As a consumer I'm appalled at the lack of quality control that has been allowed to invade our public marketplace. As a parent I'm concerned for the safety of thousands, if not millions, of young children who may receive these unsafe products as gifts.![]()
On the other hand, some parents are not quite so worried. Here's a post from the Wisebread blog that describes a more pragmatic approach to the recall issue.
What does all this mean for parents? I'm thinking that this might be a really good time to discover the non-commercial aspects to holiday season.
What about you? Are you concerned about the safety of your children's gifts? Why, or why not?
