This particular post caught my eye because I've done exactly what the poster describes - I've looked for work using Google. I've searched on the terms, "write for us," "writer's guidelines," and "blog for us" with some degree of success.
Although the post is directed towards freelance writers, I believe that a similar technique would work for other freelance professionals as well. (Why don't some of you other freelancers try some searches and leave a comment to let us know what works?)
Googling (is that a verb now?) is just one creative and unusual way to find new work projects. I heard of a freelancer who actually found additional work by reviewing a website on her blog. The website owner responded to her critique and that resulted in a dialog between the freelancer and the website owner. The final result: the website owner hired her to address some of the issues that she had pointed out in her critique.
(Note: while you can't be assured of getting a new client each time that you review a website, the above anecdote is one reason why it is important to maintain a professional tone in any website reviews that you conduct.)
What about you? Have you used any creative methods to find new projects?
