Work-At-Home Moms: How Do You Handle Criticism?
As I was doing my blog reading this morning I came across this gem on handling criticism from JCM Enterprises. Although the post is geared towards freelance writers, as I was reading it I kept thinking to myself: this post really applies to anyone who works for themselves.

Criticism is something that everyone faces, but home business owners may face it more often than others. Why? Because if you own a home business one of the many hats that you probably wear is that of complaint department.

It stands to reason that handling criticism is a key business skill. In fact, how you deal with complaints can be the difference between losing or keeping a client. It could even be the difference between staying in business or going out of business.

It can be hard to stay calm in the face of complaints and negativity, but if you want to be successful in business it's vital that you learn to do so.

Hi Courtney!

Probably just about everything you want to know about me is answered at my author profile: http://www.workfromhomemomma.com/author_profile/

I'm glad you're enjoying the site.

I used to have the whole defensive knee jerk reaction thing going on. Then a few years of dealing with editors and writers groups thickened my skin and finally gave me the slap in the back of the head I needed to learn how to separate myself from my work and look at it objectively.

It takes passion about something to make a real go of working from home. When you poor yourself into your work, it can be hard to take that step back and really look at it with a critical eye. You've got to be able to though, or criticism, whether it's constructive or not, will hit you ten times harder.

Misses E.

That's great insight! I think the defensive knee jerk thing is only natural. If we were honest, I'm sure that we've all reacted that way at times. The trick is to keep it under control.

A little late, but thank you for the mention on our site. I think you said it best: handling criticism (insert "gracefully") is a business skill.

We've branched out into covering information for all people who freelance or have online businesses - not just writers. I'm glad you found our info (and experiences!) valuable. Feel free to come visit for more great info!

Hi James!

I'm glad that you branched out. Thanks for stopping by here. I hope that you'll come often.
