Work-at-Home Moms: Do You and Your Family Have Health Insurance?

Some home and small business owners have difficulty finding health insurance. Because of the expense and red tape, a few even choose to do without health insurance for themselves and their families.

Health insurance, or lack thereof, is a particular concern for the work-at-home mom in the United States. But, it is an important concern. You never know when you might become sick and need to use your insurance.

I definitely do not recommend going without health insurance. Although you may not feel an immediate need for health insurance, it is in the best interest of you and your family to obtain coverage.

While private health insurance can be difficult to obtain, individual health insurance policies are not impossible to get. About.com: Health Insurance has some excellent information about buying an individual health insurance policy. Home Biz Notes also has some excellent information about obtaining your own health insurance.

What if you can't find health insurance due to a pre-existing condition?health-insurance-is-important.jpg

Although I have insurance through my husband, I recently had to examine insurance for pre-existing conditions for a family member who might become unemployed. What I discovered was that 30 U.S. states (including the state where I live) have high risk pools to provide insurance for individuals who would otherwise be uninsurable. Here is some additional information from the American Diabetes Association about high risk pools.

Don't forget that in the United States you may also be able to establish a medical savings account or a health savings account with pre-tax dollars. Ask your accountant if you are eligible for either of those programs and for details on how to set one up.

What about you? As a self-employed person have you had trouble finding health insurance?

Great post on health insurance for the self-employed and small business owner. I'm pleased you found my information on this topic helpful. Finding and purchasing one's own health insurance often can be challenging and expensive. So it's a good idea to learn all you can about it.

Hi Mary Emma!

I think this is a key issue that can make or break a home business. I'm fortunate to have insurance through my husband, but I hear about WAHMs who decide to do without all the time. I think that's a big mistake.
