Medical Transcriptionists: What We Do At Home Series
A popular work-at-home job is that of medical transcriptionist. A medical transcriptionist is able to take a recording from a doctor and put the doctor's words into a document, usually in a prescribed format.

While this job is often done from a doctor's office, more and more medical transcriptionists are choosing to work from home.

It is possible to learn the skills needed to become a medical transcriptionist from home through a distance learning program, through a program offered at a community college, or through a vocational school. The Association for Healthcare Documentation Integrity offers voluntary exams for individuals who desire to become a Certified Medical Transcriptionist (CMT) or a Registered Medical Transcriptionist (RMT).
WhatWeDoLogo.JPG Accuracy is a key skill for a medical transcriptionist. Another key skill is the ability to schedule your time and meet deadlines in a timely fashion. You can learn more about a medical transcriptionist career on the About.com career planning site or on My Small Business Blog.

Once you have received your desired level of certification and training, where can medical transcriptionist jobs be found?

You should explore the possibilities of providing transcription services for a former employer. You should also network with others in your profession. The Association for Healthcare Documentation Integrity offers a message board for professionals as well as a calendar of events. In addition, consider contacting prospective clients directly through a mailing or by telephone.
