As I scrolled through the list of powerful women business, I was both surprised and pleased to see that many of the companies that they work for look familiar. In fact, for most WAHMs, these companies would be household names.
Number three on the list of powerful women is Meg Whitman, President and CEO of eBay (EBAY). All by itself, eBay has spawned many work-at-home businesses. Number nine on the list is Andrea Jung, Chairman and CEO of Avon Products (AVP). Avon was probably my first exposure to a home business many years ago as I admired a next-door neighbor who ran a profitable cosmetic sales business from her home. (Avon is also the corporate home of number 42 on Fortune's list, Liz Smith.) Likewise many WAHMs would recognize the Yahoo (YHOO) corporate home of Sue Decker, who is number 20 on the Fortune magazine list. Just about every work-at-home mom who used the Internet knows about the company that has number 29 on the list, Sheryl Sandberg, as Vice-President of Global Online Sales and Operations. Sheryl's company is Google (GOOG).
All in all, five of the fifty most powerful women listed by Fortune magazine work in companies that provide products and services that are responsible for enabling small business owners. Two of the companies, eBay and Avon, could be said to be in the business of supporting individuals who wish to earn money.
While the WAHM factor isn't solely responsible for the success of these women, or their companies, the list (and the success of these organizations) does indicate that WAHMs are a growing and vital part of our economy.
