Eat Healthy - Get More Done!

As my feed readers know, I love to blog about the importance of staying fit. Not only does fitness benefit you on a personal level, but it also helps your business.

(By the way my focus on health is not because I'm exceptionally fit, but rather because information about staying fit is probably what I need to hear myself.)

That's why when I ran across some tips for breaking the snack food habit at RealSimple (by way of lifehacker), I had to share them. The post at RealSimple looks at the root causes of the reasons that we tend to snack, and then addresses each root cause with a "fix." The root causes range from being a "serious snacker" to "eating your way out of a bad mood" to being a "sugar fiend."

Addressing the root cause so that you can eat right helps more than simply telling me what to do. It makes sense to me that if I'm eating wrong because I'm in a hurry, I
need to slow down. Likewise, if I'm an emotional eater then I need to figure out what's at the root of my emotions.eat-healthy-to-feel-better.jpg

As work-at-home parents, it is important for us to get a handle on healthy eating. Here are some things to think about:
  • Our eating patterns set an example for our kids. If we eat healthy, so will they.

  • A pattern of unhealthy eating can lead to illness. As work-at-home parents without sick leave this can negatively impact our income.

  • Unhealthy eating can sap your energy. While sugar or fat can provide a short-term "rush" to your body, the long-term result is lower energy.
So, my recommendation for getting yourself to eat right is to figure out why you eat wrong. You can start with the RealSimple post, or you can use your own methods of discovery.

Remember, getting healthy is not only good for you and your family - it's also good for your business.

What about you? Are you like me? Do you struggle to eat properly? Or, have you found a way to manage your eating habits?

*sigh* I'm working on it, but there's still improvements to make. I'm a horrible emotional eater with a sweet tooth the size of Texas.

I'm still trying to learn to like baby carrots and reach for them instead of giving in to chocolate cravings. Daughter has no such problems as of yet, and I intend to get my head on straight before she develops them from watching my example.

Misses E.,

I'm right there fighting the battle with you! (Why couldn't they have made carrots and lettuce taste like chocolate and chips?)

Because that would make getting children, and adults, to eat them too easy. It's a adaptation to keep from being eaten like black and orange markings on a Monarch. ;)

How funny! You must have had the same high school science teacher that I did?
;-)

I'm still waiting for the scientists to discover that lettuce (which tastes like nothing to me) is really worthless nutritionally after all.

I find that moderation is the best way for me to go. I tend to avoid buying junk food at the grocery store but if I have a craving, I'll feed it in small doses. For me getting exercise and making sure I remember to eat is more of a problem than over-eating or eating unhealthily. I also really dislike cooking so I eat out often which is not healthy for the body or the pocket book. I've been getting better though. For me it's all about finding something to make that is effortless and nutritious.

Hi Kimberlee,

I agree that moderation is important. When I was younger I used to fall prey to a lot of the fad diets -- those are definitely NOT a good idea or healthy (even though I sometimes got short-term results).

I'm sure that if you continue your policy of moderation with exercise you will start to reap some health benefits.

I think the convenience issue is a HUGE one. As a society we are all too busy to cook.
