Traditionally on the Canadian holiday of Thanksgiving, thanks are given for a good harvest. In the United States the Columbus Day holiday commemorates the day that Christopher Columbus sighted land back in 1492.
You can read more about the origins of the Canadian holiday at this site. You can read more about the origins of the Columbus Day holiday at this site. (Tip: if you are a home school mom you may want to research these holidays further with your kids.)
What do these holidays mean for work-at-home moms in the United States? It could mean that kids are out of school. It means there is no mail service. Government offices are closed. Banks are closed. Plus, a lot of stores are having Columbus Day sales. Some towns are also having Columbus Day parades.
For those of you that remain at work, structure your day around tasks that can be accomplished without the services that are closed today. For example, today is not the right day to take a big stack of promotional brochures to post office to mail. Nor is today the right day to go to the bank to see about getting a loan for your small business. If you plan to contact someone in another business, make sure that the business is open today before you make your phone call.
What about you? Are you working today, or taking the day off?

One can always write. It's sending snail mail submissions that have to wait today.
I'm in the U.S., so it's Columbus Day. I take the big holidays off. Small ones, not so much, since it's usually just sales going on, and I hate shopping.
