Blog Action Day -- The Green Home Office

Today is blog action day, a day that thousands of bloggers are choosing to blog about the environment. (You can learn more about blog action day on their official website). As a work-at-home parent, you already have a head start on green living since you don't commute and pollute the environment.

It's not too difficult to make your home office environmentally friendly. All you need to do is look at your home office and ask the simple question: what should I be doing differently?

Here are three easy steps (in addition to working from home) that I took:blog%20action%20day.jpg

  • Light Bulb Conversion. We have converted the light bulbs in our house and in my office to fluorescent bulbs. Fluorescent bulbs use less energy (they will also save you money in the long-run).

  • Office Equpment. I use an energy efficient computer and printer. You can learn more about energy efficient office equipment and appliances at the Energy Star website.

  • Chemical Reduction. You can replace commercial chemicals that you use in your home and office with more natural and environmentally friendly substances. Examples: Vinegar is an excellent cleaning agent. Orange oil repels many insects.

Do you need more ideas? Here are what some of the best home business bloggers have to say about the environment:

Hi Laura, I've been working at home for about a year now and I am blushing because I didn't know about energy efficient computers. I try to do my part by turning it off when I'm not at the computer and I do have the "super" light bulbs as I call them. Thanks for the tips!
Right now I am working for a coalition working to ensure the energy bill set to pass in Congress does so without anymore modifications. Right now the Senate is asking for a 35 mpg fuel economy standard and Congress for a 15% renewable electricity standard by 2020. We can all help this bill pass as is by going to www.energybill2007.org and signing the petition. Why not really keep it green today on Blog Action Day? :)

Dani!

Thanks for stopping by.

I think that the energy efficient computers are relatively new. If you are working on a machine that is more than several years old it is quite possible that there weren't as many options available when you purchased your machine. I got an energy efficient model when I upgraded last year. I don't think my previous one was efficient, though.

I have a feeling that my Sony is definitely NOT being very efficient :). Hopefully I will be able to upgrade soon myself. I hope you got a chance to check out the petition, it only takes a second to send a letter to your representatives. I'm really excited about being able to make some big changes!

Hi Dani!

I'm sure you'll find a more efficient machine when the time comes.

Hi Dani!
