Work At Home Moms: Are You Prepared for Your Business to Grow?

Over at HomeBizBlogger Eve Lester has an excellent post that discusses the importance of being prepared for your home business to grow.

Having experienced moderate, but steady, business growth myself, I know from experience that when you start a home business it's easy to get caught up in the here and now and to forget to plan for the future.

However, HomeBizBlogger's point about growth is well-taken. It's important to think about, and plan for, the future. If you are serious about your business and good at what you are doing, your business should be growing.

For example, between my first and second year of working at home my very small business more than doubled. I don't think that my experience is unusual for work-at-home moms, who may tend to start out very small as they feel their way into finding and developing their business niche.

Here are some questions about growth that home business owners should ask themselves:
  1. Am I now, or will I soon, reach a point where I need to hire employees or contractors to help me keep up with the workload?

  2. Do I now, or will I soon, need help with support services like bookkeeping, billing, tax preparation, or legal advice?

  3. Can I now, or will I soon be able to, expand the line of services or products that I offer?

  4. Do I now, or will I soon, need to upgrade or replace any of my business equipment?

  5. Is my office/workspace adequate?

  6. Do I need to add a new online presence or expand an existing presence?

  7. Do I want to invest in advertising expense, and if so, where?

  8. Do I need to invest in additional training for myself, or for any employees?
It is a good idea to have these questions and answers documented, possibly in a business plan. It's also a really good idea to revisit these questions and answers every few months.

What about you? Is your business growing? Are you prepared for growth?

Hi Eve!

Thanks for providing the inspiration. I'm sure I left some things off, but this is a checklist that I plan to look over myself every few months.

Hi Doris! I'm glad that you enjoyed the article. I'd love to be in one of your features.
