Tanya Rider Saved By Cell Phone: Could A Cell Phone Save Your Kids?
My kids and I watched the news this morning in fascination as the rescue of Tanya Rider unfolded.

For those of you who may not be familiar with the story, Tanya Rider is the Washington State woman who went missing last week, apparently when her car drove off the highway. Rescuers were able to find Tanya by tracing the signal from her cell phone. You can read more about it in the Associated Press story.

Tanya's rescue and survival after eight days of being trapped in her car is nothing short of miraculous.

As a mom concerned with the safety of my kids, it makes me feel better to know that my kids carry cell phones. I know that some parents wrestle with the question of whether or not (and at what age) their kids should have cell phones. Tanya's story, however, highlights the safety issue of having a cell phone. Heaven forbid, if anything like what happened to Tanya were to happen to one of my kids, at least their cell phones could be traced.

Personally, I feel safer with a cell phone too. I nearly always have it with me. So far, I haven't needed for an emergency, but it feels good to know that it is there in case I need it.

What about you? Do your kids carry cell phones?

You know, I just got my daughter a cell phone because it was free and came with some free minutes. I thought I would be worried sick about her using it all day every day. What I didn't anticipate was the peace of mind it gave me, knowing that if she had any sort of problem, I was easily reachable!

I hate to say it, but now I think that more kids should have cell phones, if just for the safety aspect of being able to call for help! :)

Hi Wendy!

Yes, knowing that the kids have a cell phone definitely provides a piece of mind. My daughter also says it makes her feel safer. If she sees someone she's afraid of she takes it out and pretends to talk into it.

My 11 year old has a cell phone. I got it for her as a gift for her birthday. Family of course said she was to young or made it seem like I was spoiling her. I personally think it depends on the child. If they are mature enough to take care of it and understand the limits you put on the use of it that makes a big difference. I definately feel better that she has it and can call me any time she needs too. Plus she is not allowed to use it for any other purpose, definately not hour+ long phone calls to her friends just to "chat"!

Hi Angeline!

You touched on a big issue with kids and cellphones -- will they use it responsibly? Fortunately, there are now some plans out there that limit who they can call.

I believe there is also a way you can limit who can call them. Some sort of a blocking feature I heard about from a friend. Luckily I havent had to mess with figuring that out cause she knows not to answer calls she doesn't recognize.

Also with my daughter and the issue of using it responsibly is simple, If she doesnt, she won't have it!

Thank god for detailed billing information :D

Hi Angelina,

I agree with you about the detailed billing information. That can be a parent's best friend.
