For those of you who may not be familiar with the story, Tanya Rider is the Washington State woman who went missing last week, apparently when her car drove off the highway. Rescuers were able to find Tanya by tracing the signal from her cell phone. You can read more about it in the Associated Press story.
Tanya's rescue and survival after eight days of being trapped in her car is nothing short of miraculous.
As a mom concerned with the safety of my kids, it makes me feel better to know that my kids carry cell phones. I know that some parents wrestle with the question of whether or not (and at what age) their kids should have cell phones. Tanya's story, however, highlights the safety issue of having a cell phone. Heaven forbid, if anything like what happened to Tanya were to happen to one of my kids, at least their cell phones could be traced.
Personally, I feel safer with a cell phone too. I nearly always have it with me. So far, I haven't needed for an emergency, but it feels good to know that it is there in case I need it.
What about you? Do your kids carry cell phones?

You know, I just got my daughter a cell phone because it was free and came with some free minutes. I thought I would be worried sick about her using it all day every day. What I didn't anticipate was the peace of mind it gave me, knowing that if she had any sort of problem, I was easily reachable!
I hate to say it, but now I think that more kids should have cell phones, if just for the safety aspect of being able to call for help! :)
