I always thought that eating light popcorn for lunch was kind of a healthy thing to do, or at least, not a negative thing to do. While it's true that there's no nutritional value in popcorn, if you eat the light variety there's no fat or sugar in it either. It's a little bit high in sodium content, but that's not something I have to worry about yet.
It turns out that maybe I was wrong about the safety of popcorn. I was surprised by news stories today that indicate that chemicals used in flavoring microwave popcorn have been linked to lung ailments in consumers. Read about it on USA Today here: ConAgra to drop popcorn chemical linked to lung ailment.
(I should say that so far, the news reports have been specific to the Orville Redenbacher and Act II brands of popcorn and not the Jolly Time brand pictured with this post. The consumer who developed lung disease apparently ate microwave popcorn several times a day.)
Personally, I eat microwave popcorn several times a week. My kids eat it several times a month (not as a meal, though). I never dreamed that it might be harmful to my family's health. I feel, well, sort of betrayed by the popcorn lung news. I'm sure that occasionally we must have breathed in the fumes of the microwave popcorn.
It also makes me wonder about popcorn cakes (like rice cakes, only made with popcorn), a low calorie snack alternative that I sometimes pack in the kids' lunches. Popcorn cakes come in butter flavor too. Is that flavoring safe, or is the chemical only dangerous when it's microwaved?
What do you think about this? Are you concerned about the new findings? Will this affect your snacking habits?

I rarely eat any type of popcorn so the news won't really affect my snacking habits. I do know a bunch of people who do eat microwaved popcorn though so this is concerning. What I've started to notice though is that often we (including myself but really as a nation) opt for "food product" because of our go-go-go lifestyles and most of the time it's just really bad for us. I HATE cooking but I've been trying to find quick health conscious things I can make for my family. I'll be honest though, its real hard to resist the take out temptation...
