Today was International Talk Like A Pirate Day. (For real, check out this news story from TransWorldNews and The Original Talk Like A Pirate Day home page.)
Did you celebrate it?
I have to admit that I totally missed this one. For my particular business, I just can't see a way that I really could have participated in this one. I work by myself. I have a lot of editing to do right now, but I don't think that my clients would be very amused if I edited "like a pirate."
However, I can see where some small crafts-related businesses could possibly take advantage of this offbeat holiday. Perhaps they could use themed advertising or even create some "pirate" items to sell.
With the popularity of the recent Pirates of the Caribbean movie series, I suppose that this day could potentially appeal to a wide variety of ages. Where I really see it taking off, however, is with the kids.![]()
In fact when I first found out about this holiday I was reminded of my own elementary school teacher, "Mrs. M." "Mrs. M." would have celebrated International Talk Like a Pirate Day for sure.
How do I know that she would have celebrated International Talk Like a Pirate Day?
"Mrs. M." was one of those teachers who found something special about each and every day. She always had something unique written about the day's date on the chalkboard and she frequently updated her bulletin boards to match the theme of the day. Then "Mrs. M." would use that day's bit of trivia to interest us kids in history, science, or literature.
I loved it! As a kid, I actually looked forward to hearing each day's fact. It made each day seem special to me.
In fact, maybe that's the true lesson behind International Talk Like a Pirate Day and it's not just for kids: each and every day is special, if you choose to look at it that way.
Today was International Talk Like a Pirate Day, what will tomorrow be?
