One thing that home business owners often overlook is the comfort factor. Ergonomics are important, especially if you sit at a computer all day (like me).
In fact, according to a recent post at the Two Minute Commute: "A home office's design can either contribute or decrease a home based business owner's productivity..."
I agree.
While you don't necessarily have to have a separate room in your house or an expensive setup for your home office, you do need to be comfortable in your work environment in order to be productive. Working in anything less than a comfortable setup is asking for failure. ![]()
I can personally attest to the importance of a good office chair. We splurged on mine and got one that is a good fit and comfortable to sit in. Once in a while the kids will take my office chair (because it's so comfortable) over to one of their computers. I've tried sitting in other chairs, but after a short time I find myself aching.
In this article by Philip Culver, for example, he discusses the features of a good office chair. That bargain chair may seem like a deal at first, until after you've sat in it all day! This list makes a good checklist if you need a new office chair, or if you're just setting up your business.
Other comfort factors that can affect your productivity include: lighting, height of workstation, and angle of the computer monitor or keyboard.
What about you? Do you think comfort is important for a home office? Why or why not?
