In fact, this post is so good that if I had employees (I don't -- my business is just me), I would print this out and require them to read it.
It's easy to take e-mail for granted and got sloppy with your e-mail responses. But, if you're running a home-based business, getting sloppy with e-mail is the last thing that you want to do.
E-mail can also be a big consumer of time. Lillie deals with e-mail management in her post under the heading "Time-Saving Tips and Tricks." I've especially started adhering to the "Keep your Inbox, Outbox, and Junk folders cleaned out." A full inbox can be overwhelming. It's best to deal with e-mail right at least twice a day, depending on the volume that you receive.
The only tips that I could think of to add to Lillie's great list were:
- Make sure that you have a spam filter installed. If all of those spam e-mails that I've recieved over the years telling me that I won money were real, I'd be a millionaire by now! Spam, if not filtered, can fill your inbox with junk e-mail. If you inbox is too full, you might even miss a message from a client.
- There are some times when you should wait to send your e-mail. If you are extremely upset, I've found that it's best to wait before sending out an e-mail. You may think that you are writing clearly, only to discover later that your emotions leaked out into your message. I've also found that it is a good idea to wait before sending an e-mail message if you are extremely tired. You are much more likely to have typos and mistakes in your message if when you are exhausted.
