When I first began to look at ideas for a home business, one of the ideas that I looked at was writing for greeting cards. Apparently, I'm not the only one who that of that as a way to earn money since this poster has writing greeting cards as #11 on her giant list of Ideas for a Writer to Make Money.
However, writing for greeting cards is not as simple as it might seem. I actually went as far as starting to create a list of companies that hire independent contractors to write for their greeting cards before deciding to stick with business writing.
- Greeting card companies finalize copy months in advance. The deadline for Christmas copy may be early spring. The deadline for Valentines Day cards might be summer of the preceding year.
- Greeting card companies are looking for really unique ideas and ideas the appeal to niche markets. A card with an ordinary "Merry Christmas to my husband" sentiment probably won't sell. A card with a "Merry Christmas to my third ex-husband" just might.
- Some greeting card companies don't list their writer's guidelines on their website. You will need to contact the company and ask for the guidelines. Some companies will not respond.
- Most greeting card companies have a niche that they serve and will not accept ideas outside of their niche. A card company that specializes in funny cards won't accept an idea for a sentimental card, and vice-versa.
- Many card companies don't guarantee that they'll return your submission, so keep a copy of it for yourself.
