The times when my office is noisy, it can be really noisy with kids fighting, the dog barking, the doorbell ringing -- what a racket!! When it's quiet, though, it's really quiet -- like the times after the kids go to bed or before they get in the morning-- there's not a sound to be heard. I never had an office environment so quiet.
While I know there are those who work well in noisy environments, I tend to be one of those who do better when it is quiet. That is why I read the post Tune Out the Noise at the At Home Mom Blog with interest.
In the post, Genesis lists four tips for blocking out the noise of a busy house. Her helpful tips range from wearing headphones to sending the kids outside to play.
Here are a few additional tips to help lower the noise factor:
- Give the kids a quiet task. This can be anything from folding laundry to doing a puzzle to making a craft. This past summer we got my daughter interested in beading. The bonus is that she has found what might become a lifelong interest!
- Send a kid away. The kids can't fight if they aren't together. Sometimes we allow one of them to go to spend a day at Dad's office. Once in a while a friend will pick one of them up for the day. The kids look forward to these treats and I get some quiet time.
- Keep the dog away from the window. If the dog is in the room where I work it seldom barks because the windows are high up on the wall and it can't see out of them. However, if the dog is in the living room where the windows are low enough to look out of it barks frequently.
