With many states declaring tax-free holidays just as parents begin to look for back-to-school bargains, taxes aren't quite so certain anymore. At least, sales taxes aren't.
Through Elizabeth at CareerandKids I discovered Kelly the TaxGirl's list of sales tax holidays. (Hurry, in many states the tax holidays start as early as August 2nd!) In my state, Texas, the sales tax can be up to 8.5 percent of your total bill. For each $100 of school supplies that we buy, we save $8.50 if we purchase the supplies during a tax-free holiday!
There's more! Many of those same school supplies: paper, pens, notebooks, calculators, and even computers are exactly what the well-stocked home office needs. (Check Kelly's article to find out exactly what items will be tax-free on the tax holiday in your state.)
The tax savings on the tax-free holiday are one reason that our family attempts to stock up on school and office supplies for the entire year during tax-free weekend.
Is there a sales tax holiday where you live? If so, how do you plan on taking advantage of the savings?
