I find work-at-home scams particularly heinous because they tend to victimize those who are vulnerable:
- Moms looking for a way to stay with their kids and still earn money
- Individuals in financial trouble
- Disabled folks who are home-bound and looking for a way to be productive
There are ways to check to see if a work-at-home opportunity is legitimate. Here are five sites to visit to see if that "too good opportunity" is for real:
1. scam.com
This is a forum where you can post about or read about a wide variety of scams including (but not limited to): Internet scams, MLM scams, and work-at-home scams.
2. Better Business Bureau
You can submit the name of a business, a business phone, a business URL, an e-mail address, or a general type of business to bring up a report on that business. If there is no report, the site asks if you would like the Better Business Bureau to create one.
3. Federal Trade Commission
The Federal Trade Commission has a great deal of information -- it not only has warnings about fraudulent business schemes, but it also contains helpful business tips and other information.
4. ScamBusters
You'll want to check this list of the Top 10 Work At Home and Home Based Business Scams. Other information on the site includes details on identity theft and urban legends.
If you know the name of a company you can search the Ripoff Report database to see if any reports have been filed filed. This site allows consumers to file reports about companies or individuals. It's important to note that, according to their website, "Ripoff Report does not guarantee that all reports are authentic or accurate."
What do you think? Have you been the victim of a work-at-home scam? Have you used one of these sites to identify a scam? Leave a comment and let me know what happened.
