As more and more website owners look for ways to stand out from the increasingly crowded online business scene, social media is becoming more and more of a hot topic. Web Worker Daily has recently published two articles on the topic: How To Network Like A Human, Not A Computer and Unsocial Networking: The Next Frontier?.
What I wondered about was whether social networking would help a traditional business model. While it's well established that social networking can help online businesses, could social networking help a lower tech business model -- For example, let's say, someone who makes and sells jewelry from their home.
As I researched the topic I became more and more convinced that if your firm has an online presence at all your business could benefit from social networking. I found an article at Entrepreneur.com that helped to confirm this, Becoming More Social. The article includes an anecdote on how one author was able to increase her book sales by introducing herself to people on MySpace.
One of the best things about using social networking to market your business is that the only cost is time. (I have found, though, that it is easy to spend a lot of time on social networking without even trying.)
A key thing to consider when engaging in social network is who your target market. What social networking sites are they likely to frequent? Your social networking campaign should focus on those sites.
This post wouldn't be complete without a list of popular social networking sites. I'm only a moderate user of networking, but for those of you who are interested I'll share whether or not I participate in the social media and what my user name is there. Here's are a few social networking sites including some of my favorites:
- MySpace.
- FaceBook.
- Netscape.
- Technorati. My user name is writingthoughts on this site. Work From Home Momma has it's own presence here.
- StumbleUpon. I'm TXWriter here.
- MyBlogLog. I'm TXWriter here.
- Blogg-Buzz. For some reason I'm Laura here.
Here are some social networking sites just for women:
What about you? Do you use social networking to market your home business? Leave a comment and tell me how. Do you have a favorite social networking site? Leave me a note and tell me what it is.
