On the eMoms at Home blog Wendy Piersall links to a piece at Valleywag that highlights an instance of a large corporation acquiring and adding an existing mommyblog as part of their overall marketing strategy.
Blogs about mothering and the trials and joys of mothering are often referred to as "mommyblogs." In the past some bloggers have looked down upon mothering blogs, but, as Wendy's post indicates, a few mommybloggers may be laughing all the way to the bank.
Is this part of a growing trend? We can only speculate, but it makes a lot of sense. For most families, it's the mom that still does most of the shopping for a wide variety of products. Plus, moms are a huge demographic. Moms include women from about age twenty on into their fifties. What business wouldn't want to target that large of a group?![]()
Before you get too excited and run out to start your own mommyblog, note that the competition among mommybloggers is tough. There are literally hundreds of mommyblogs out there. In fact, this post at MothersDayCentral lists what they view as the top 100 Mom Blogs. Their list doesn't even include many of my favorite blogs!
There's no doubt that savvy corporations and other capitalists will target only the cream of the crop, only the blogs with the highest number of readers, for their offers. I predict that a relatively small percentage of mommybloggers will ever see large offers.
Putting all the caveats aside, though, this is definitely a trend to watch.
What do you think? Will companies turn to existing mommyblogs to draw readers into their marketing strategy?
Are you a mommyblogger? Have you been approached by a corporation or a venture capitalist?

Well, I haven't been approached by a Venture Capitalist yet, but I'm sure raising my hand right here and now to get noticed! ;) Great post, Laura!
