Alberto Gonzales Resigns -- What Can the Home Business Owner Learn?
Alberto Gonzales, U.S. Attorney, announced his resignation today (Monday, August 27, 2007). His resignation follows a number of accusations and controversies.
You can read more about the Attorney General's resignation in the New York Times  or on the CNN website.

What lessons can the home business owner with employees learn from the resignation of Gonzales? President Bush is dealing with a situation that often occurs in any business environment: resignation of a staff member. I can think of several lessons that could apply to a small business situation:

  1. Key personnel can and will leave. Have a back-up plan in place.

  2. If the staff leaves on good terms, respond graciously. We've been taught not to burn are bridges as employees, but the principle applies to employers as well.

  3. Move on. Recognize the contribution of the departing staff without dwelling on it. Get back to business.

In the Gonzales situation, we may never know if any of the allegations were true. We can, however, watch the situation for mistakes as well as successes and apply the principles of good management to our own businesses.

Excellent post, Laura!

Thanks Easton!

I have dealt with employees resigning and numerous times via clients. A common denominator is that it is never really a surprise. The lesson is to be aware of your environment for change and reasons for change and have a solid succession plan and recruiting strategy in place so you don't miss a beat.
It is hard, but important to plan for the unknown even during the best of times.

Hi David! That's good insight about it never really being a surprise.
