What lessons can the home business owner with employees learn from the resignation of Gonzales? President Bush is dealing with a situation that often occurs in any business environment: resignation of a staff member. I can think of several lessons that could apply to a small business situation:
- Key personnel can and will leave. Have a back-up plan in place.
- If the staff leaves on good terms, respond graciously. We've been taught not to burn are bridges as employees, but the principle applies to employers as well.
- Move on. Recognize the contribution of the departing staff without dwelling on it. Get back to business.
In the Gonzales situation, we may never know if any of the allegations were true. We can, however, watch the situation for mistakes as well as successes and apply the principles of good management to our own businesses.
