Three Reasons Not to Totally Ditch Your Business Suit

Over at the At Home Mom Blog Genesis posted 5 Reasons You Should Not Work in Pajamas. I think that she makes some excellent points.

Personally, I've found that I accomplish more on the days that I at least pull on a pair of jeans and a tee shirt. If I keep my PJs on it's just too tempting to take a short nap.

Lack of a dress code is definitely a perk for work-at-home moms and telecommuters. When I was in the corporate world I took extra care (and spent extra money) to make sure that I appeared businesslike and professional every day.

Now that I work at home my wardrobe needs have been reduced. I can buy my business wardrobe (tee shirts and jeans) just about anywhere. Since clients don't come to my house that's fine, except ...

Except for those few times that I do need to project a professional image. Even if you never see a client face-to-face here are three times that you might still want to don your professional wardrobe:
  1. You have an appointment with a bookkeeper, accountant, or attorney.
  2. You want to take a professional photo for an online profile such as for your website or blog.
  3. You are asked to speak about your business for a local group.
If you're like me, and you've been out of the corporate world for quite a while, you may find that your professional wardrobe needs to be refreshed. That's why I went out recently and purchased a new business outfit for myself.

Don't get me wrong. I'm definitely not advocating that you dress up to sit in your home when you know that no one will be stopping by. I'm just saying to make sure that you do have a professional outfit on hand if you need one.

What about you? Do you still have a large, corporate wardrobe? Do you work in PJs? Leave a comment and let me know.

Good reasons for having a business wardrobe. I personally have yet to earn enough to deal with any bookkeepers, but for online photos, it would be a good idea for me to get a more dressy outfit.

By the way, with two kids under 2, I have no problems taking a nap even in jeans! :D Thanks for running with my idea.

Welcome Genesis! The clothing issue is one that I think we all wrestle with -- whether it's the question of what to where while we work or if we really need something more formal.

This is for sure. I do the same thing when I'm talking to any one about business from home I allways dress to atire. Even when I just go down to starbucks for a cup of coffee. I allways dress up you never no who your gonna run into. There is the whole vibe thing when your talking to some one about your products or your bussiness. Good stuff.

Hi Rodney! I don't dress up to work at home, but I do dress. I do know some work-at-home folks who stay in their PJs most of the day. This isn't meant to be a dig at them, but (as you pointed out) it's much easier to run out to Starbucks if you're dressed.

I am new to working at home and have our guest bedroom filled with suits. I find it convenient for when a client meeting or business travel pops up because I always have at least one that is clean! As far as everyday, I am learning that I am more productive and feel better if I get dressed - casual, but nice enough to run to Starbucks or even meet a friend or my husband for lunch.

Hi Anonymous! I wish you luck with your new status working from home. I don't have a guest bedroom filled with suits, but otherwise you sound like me. I often dash off to have lunch with my husband.
