At Home and Working

Hi! My name is Laura Spencer and I'm happy to join you, the reader, as the new blogger for Work From Home Momma. I'm a writer by both nature and profession, with over seventeen years of professional business writing experience. I'm also the mom of two lovely daughters. That means that I know firsthand about the tension between work and family.

For the last five years I've operated a freelance writing business from my home.  I know exactly what it's like to have your office in your house. I'm also well aware ofLaura.JPG some of the unique challenges that home-based businesses face. At Work From Home Momma we'll address and solve some of these challenges. My vision for this blog is to make it an interactive community where we can all come together to learn and grow.

Don't hesitate to come by Work From Home Momma and share your own ideas and opinions about working from home. I want to hear them. If you have specific questions, let me know. If I don't know the answer I'll look it up, post about it, and we'll both learn.

So, whether you currently work at home or want to work at home, whether you are self-employed or telecommuting, this is your blog! I hope to see you here often.

If you want to visit my other blog homes you can stop by WritingThoughts where I share my thoughts and experiences as a freelance writer, or by OpinionMom where I give my opinions on life and stuff.

My wife and I have a small business, a handyman service, but I have begun to experience some latent affects of physical injury that may require me to shut my business down. My wife, however, still works outside the home as a manager of a medical office. She has amassed quite a knowledge and experience base with being a director of medical records,to medical coding and billing and, now all three where she uses her skills in managing the medical office of an asthma and allergy clinic. She is, quite obviously, a very efficient multitasker and has, for the most part, learned all of her skills while working on the job over the course of about 15 years.
Regrettably, she was diagnosed with an auto immune disorder, idiopathic anaphylaxis, which has given rise to some other serious secondary allergies issues. She has recently contemplated telecommuting from home and, since she has considerable experience in both paper and electronic billing systems, we both believe it will be a good fit for her and our current living situation. However, she did mention to her employer that she would like to explore the options of working from home and he did not respond favorably.
I am in the process of remodeling part of our home to accomodate a fairly sizable office space for me to engage my particular business and, hopefully, for her to be able to engage her future desires of operating a medical billing business from home.
What, if any, recommendations or advice would anyone here have to offer to someone like her? I love my wife dearly and would love to see her be able to realize the dream of working from home so that she can be in a more relaxed atmosphere and within the parameters of her medical condition which, quite often, leaves her fatigued and tired. We are of modest means and live our lives accordingly. We don't ascribe to the fast food and instant gratification mentality that so many Americans do so, we're pretty good at living within out means. What sort of investment and operating capital would we be looking at for her to start her own business? Also, are there other companies out there who hire someone like her to do home based medical billing so that she could work from home in the interim and build the capital to start her own business?
Any and all advice will be greatly appreciated and heavily weighed. Thank you for your time.
Sincerely,
Dawg

Hi Boyd & Rebekkah McLaughlin,

I'm sorry that it took such a long time to get back to you. I plan to post on this topic soon.

In the meantime, I'd say to read everything that you can find on the topic. Starting a home business part-time while you continue to work your day jobs might be the best option in your situation.

Whatever you decide, I wish you the best.
