So it’s time for Spiderman 3. You know what that means, don’t you? Yup. The
merchandise frenzy has begun. Mind you, my four and a half year old son has never seen any of the Spiderman movies, yet he still owns a Spiderman backpack, a Spiderman pillow, Spiderman pajamas and a couple of action figures. I’m not saying Spiderman is a bad role model, just an expensive one.
It’s hard talking to a preschooler about money. Especially preschoolers who have a serious case of the “I Wants.” We have long talks about why Mommy has to work and what we do with the money, but it still doesn’t sink in. Now that all of the preschool kids are coming into show ‘n’ tell with Spiderman 3 merchandise, it’s even harder to explain why “the other kids” get all this neat new stuff and he has to wait and hope he gets some Spiderman 3 related stuff in a Happy Meal.
Every time a new movie comes out the stores explode with promotional toys and merchandise. What gets me is that many of these movies aren’t appropriate for a preschooler, yet they manufacture age-appropriate toys. I can’t keep up. Darn you, Spiderman 3!
