How Do You Know You’re Ready to Work from Home?

Leaving a regular job to work from home isn’t a decision one should enter into lightly. For one thing, many WAHMs experience a large pay cut. Additionally, many of us also miss the camaraderie of working in an office. It can be lonely at home without any grown up company. Still the situation is ideal for those of us who have the opportunity to work at home while taking care of our children.

If you’re considering leaving the stability of a full-time job, make sure you research well in advance. Ask yourself these questions:

  • What will I do?
  • What am I qualified to do?
  • Can I afford any initial investment?
  • Will this pay the bills?
  • Will I be able to do this job and manage my family and household?

If you think you can swing it, make a list of pros and cons. In addition to the perks, think carefully about the downside of a home-based career or business. If you’re still convinced, my advice to you is to choose your job before leaving your full time employment. If it’s possible, dabble during your spare time. Try and build up contacts and a good reputation. Once you’re starting to bring in money and make a name for yourself you can consider leaving your job to work at home.

It helps if you have a supportive spouse and can manage the family expenses on one salary until you begin to bring in a steady income. Your family may have to cut some corners until you make it, but most WAHMs agree the sacrifice is worth it.

Deborah NG,

Do you know what happened to Marta? She seemed to disappear off this site. the last I heard from her was sometime in February.

Thanks, snooks

Hi snooks - sorry, but Marta hasn't been writing at this blog for quite some time. She moved on - she's alive and well, just working elsewhere. We loved all the great work she did here though! Please do get to know Deborah; she knows what she's talking about and I'm sure she would be happy to help.
