Some WAHMs need to work during the times when the kids are awake or home
from school, but this can sometimes prove difficult. Kids are always clamoring for attention, and if yours are anything like my five year old, it’s tough to get any kind of work done when they’re home. Thank goodness for preschool and day camp! We only do a few hours each morning, but it’s a big help. If not for that, I might have hired a babysitter.
I know, I know, babysitters are expensive. Plus, don’t we work at home so we can spend time with our kids? I’m not suggesting a full time someone to come in and spend an entire day. If you need an extra couple of hours each week to get things done, it couldn’t hurt to hire a high school or college student as a mother’s helper.
Since you’ll be home, you can still supervise. By hiring a student on an as needed basis, you’ll have someone to play with the kids or help them with their homework or a craft project, while you meet a deadline or catch up on mounting housework. Teens are always looking for ways to earn money, so it shouldn’t be too difficult to find takers. Contact your local high school’s career counselor or post a note at the local community college. Of course you’ll want to interview a few students before making a decision, but responsible kids aren’t hard to find. Since you’ll be home, your children won’t be left alone with your helper anyway.
Something to think about anyway!

Be sure to check with local homeschooling groups also! Oftentimes there are preteens/teens who would make great mothers' helpers and they are available during the day. The benefit to them? Building that resume and earning credit if you reside in a state that requires their home educator parent to track credits/create transcripts. Helping out with a baby or preschooler = Early Childhood Education credits.
I found a fantastic mother's helper this way who worked her way up from watching my toddler for a few hours with me in the house (when she was a young teen) up to watching my preschooler (in her late teens) through dinner and bedtime while I got some much needed Mom's Night Out time with another single mom friend. To this day my daughter and I miss her, but she's off to college!
