I’d like to thank yesterday’s Nor’easter, without which I couldn’t have taken my
first sick day in over five years. If it wasn’t for the storm, all of the roads leading in and out of town would be open. Instead, they were all flooded and my husband couldn’t make it to work.
As a work at home mom it’s hard enough balancing home and work, add illness to the mix and you’re talking missed assignment and missed deadlines. Plus, most WAHMs are independent contractors, we don’t get paid sick days anyway. Most of us can’t afford the drop in pay and work when we’re clearly under the weather.
By late yesterday morning, I couldn’t lift my head from the couch. I was ordered to bed and there I stayed until this morning. I’m paying the price now though, as I’m struggling to keep up with my blogs and assignments. It’s a good lesson; I like to work ahead a little for just this reason. Holidays, family visits, storms and cable outages left me far behind. If I had planned my assignments beforehand, instead of procrastinating, I wouldn’t be plugging away at 8:30 PM with no end in site.
Don’t get me wrong. The last thing you want to do is overdo it or neglect your family. After all, family is why we’re home in the first place, right? But if you know you’re going to be out of town or spending a few days away from the computer, don’t count on the last minute for catching up. You never know when a storm, or illness, can strike.

This is so true. No paid sick leave. No paid vacation. No paid personal leave.
Good post Deb!
