The other day my son’s preschool teacher brought her two sons, aged 12 and 13,
to work with her. The kids helped out and the little guys responded well to them. Take Your Child to Work Day is a great way for parents and kids to bond and also a way for children to understand what it is Mommy or Daddy do all day. It also lets them form a few ideas about what career is right for them. What happens, however, when every day is Take Your Child to Work Day?
- You have no incentive to get out of your jammies. Unless you’re making a preschool drop off or heading to the supermarket, the chances of you wearing something flannel until noon are pretty good.
- When your child finally sits down to play nicely by himself, you still feel guilty for not spending time with him.
- Every time you start to get involved in what you’re doing, you’re interrupted with calls of “Mom, I’m hungry!” “Mom, he took my toy!” “Mom, I have to go potty!” This usually happens in two minute intervals, it’s called the WAHM aerobics.
- Hoping for a nice quiet afternoon? WAHMs work to the following soundtrack: the sound of children playing, the sound of children fighting, or the sound of Dora the Explorer or an equally loud and annoyingly-voiced character from Disney or Nick Jr.
Sure, your kids may be super helpful at the office on Take Your Kids to Work Day. Take those same kids to work every day and see what happens. Twenty four hours later those same helpful children turn needy and whiney the second you sit down to do something productive. I want to propose a special day for WAHMS called Take My Kids Away for a Day Day. Now that’ll be a productive experience.

Loved this topic, I can so relate. ;) Yes, you never can plan your day at home, it is one of those you do what you can when you can type of jobs.
